According to the American Cancer Institute, breast cancer is second only to non-melanoma skin cancer among women, as approximately 12 percent of the female population born today will receive a diagnosis at some point in their lives.

According to Desai, “They’ll pay one doctor one thing, another doctor something else,” and “It’s all negotiated and it depends on the insurance company.”

Estimates from the National Institutes of Health have shown that in the United States in 2010, the overall cost of cancer was $264 billion.
