Health Insurance Won’t Cover Things Like a Wig!
Proposal for a new bill that would guarantee insurance coverage to pay for wigs is currently under review in the House of Representatives. However, there is a catch. This proposal is only for a certain age group.
When Oregon State Representative Sara Gelser first proposed this bill, many people probably breathed out a big sigh of, “finally.” But it may have been a premature sigh for most of them; this bill will only cover ages 25 and under.
There are many diseases and treatments for diseases that can cause a loss of hair; chemotherapy, endocrine disease and alopecia, to name just a few. However, most insurance policies will not cover the purchase of a wig; even when the hair loss is due to a disease or a treatment for disease.
When asked about the age restriction, Gelser reasoned that a child with no hair suffered extreme psychological consequences; insinuating, that for adults who are older, it is more of a cosmetic issue. Another explanation given is that when politicians give an insurance directive, they try to keep it as limited as possible (thus, the age range).
Anyone who has suffered from hair loss, or knows someone who lost their hair, because of a disease or disease treatment, can tell you how devastating it is. It can make you feel vulnerable and powerless; causing depression and emotional anxiety. All of which, cause more stress on the body, which can increase the time it takes to heal.
The majority of clientele who inquire about wigs are older than 25, and most are shocked by the fact their insurance won’t cover the cost. It’s a huge blow for those people who can’t afford to buy one if the insurance won’t pay for at least a part of the cost. Especially after hearing how much wigs run…anywhere from $120 to $3000, depending on synthetic or real hair, comfort and style.
Unfortunately, most do not find out about things health insurance won’t cover…our hope is to educate people on the benefits of why supplemental insurance is so important.
